ATV and Snowmobile Trails

Forest Service Trail #7 is adjacent to Cole Cabins and it connects to over 300 hundred miles of other trails through the Black Hills. Start snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, ATVing, or off-roading in your Jeep right from our yards. Ride the forest all day and then relax back at Cole Cabins after your adventure!

Bring your own machines or rent them from one of our neighbors:

We are proud to support the South Dakota ATV/UTV Association. Their website has a wealth of information.

ATV Licensing: Licensed ATV’s are permitted on all roads in South Dakota, but you do need a valid license plate and the ATV must be road ready. A temporary license plate can be purchased from the Lawrence County Treasure’s Office in Deadwood.

ATV Permits: You do need a permit from the National Forest Service to ride the trails in the Black Hills National Forest. Visit their website to buy the ATV permits and see maps and other info.

Snowmobile Licensing: Snowmobiles must be licensed. Normally this would be done where you live. Those that are not licensed can be temporarily licensed for five days and the license can be purchased at The Steel Wheel Trading Post a mile away from us.

Snowmobile Permits: There are no permits other then the license mentioned above.

Snowmobile Trail Maps: Maps of the snowmobile trails may be downloaded from here.
Check snow and trail conditions by calling: 800-445-3474.

Go hiking or biking on the Mickelson Trail; which starts in Deadwood and follows historic rail lines for 114 miles with a maximum grade of 3 percent. It consists of a hard packed gravel surface with tunnels and trestles to add to the trail’s charm. Horse back riding is also allowed on the Mickelson Trail.

Download the Mickelson Trail map here .

Lots of Hiking and Biking information can be found on the Black Hills, Badlands Association website. They have seperate links for hiking and backpacking and biking.

Black Hills The Hike.com is a great place for hiking information.
